2016 CENSUS’LL END DISPUTE OVER PREVIOUS EXERCISE –NPC




The National Population Commission, NPC, has said that the fresh census to be conducted in 2016 will put an end to the lingering legal dispute over the 2006 census exercise, as the figures from the exercise will become the official population figures of the country.
Chairman of the Commission, Chief Eze Duruiheoma, gave the indication in Abuja, yesterday, during a one-day retreat on the ‘’Imperative for the Conduct of the 2016 Population and Housing Census,’’ with members of the National Assembly and other stakeholders.
The chairman, who was represented by the Commissioner representing Enugu State, Festus Uzor, said that though appeals against the Census Tribunals decisions are still pending, he added that the decisions of the tribunal are still valid and binding until set aside on appeal.
Duruiheoma said the census in 2016 will obviously address these anomalies, as the census tribunals set up for the purpose had upheld some of the complaints.
He recalled that when the result of the 2006 population and housing census was released, some state and local government councils disputed the result as it affected them on various grounds.
According to him, the commission has taken into account contemporary economic, political and security issues confronting the nation, adding that notwithstanding these challenges, conducting an accurate and reliable census in 2016 is feasible and will help to support the giant strides towards sustainable development which the nation has recorded within the last few years.
The NPC boss said that the retreat is aim at strengthening the support of the National Assembly for the successful conduct of the 2016 population and housing census, why its objectives is to present an overview of key national issues that have made the conduct of the census in 2016 compelling.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Population and Identity Card, Senator Maina Ma’aji Lawan, assured that he will convey all that transpired at the retreat to the National Assembly and that the National Assembly will give all the necessary support for the success of the 2016 census.
