I WILL CONTEST REPS’ SPEAKERSHIP – AKANDE

The majority leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Mulikat Akande, yesterday said she will contest the speakership of the House of Representatives if it is zoned to the South West.
She stated this yesterday when she picked her nomination forms at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.
When asked about her ambition to emerge speaker of the House, she said “I will definitely want to be the speaker.”
Akande, who represents Oyo, Ogbomosho North, South/Orire Federal Constituency also said PDP is recovering from the major electoral setbacks it suffered in the South West.
“PDP suffered major setbacks in the last election in the South West, but now

the effort we are making is apparent; as you can see, we won in Ekiti State and that means all the members will be coming from PDP this time.
“In Oyo State, we don’t have a governor; we have five members from there and the number is going to double now. In Ogun State also, we didn’t have but many members have decamped and they are coming back; we have Ondo State as well.
“Governor Mimiko has joined PDP, so automatically, all the seven members from Ondo will become PDP members. So, I think the so-called losses are now gains for us,” she said.
On whether or not she will step down for another aspirant, she said: “I don’t think that is the right way because it is a mandate and if people give it to you, then you should go ahead and represent them. It’s all about continuity.”
