GOVT GETS N3.3B EU GRANT FOR DEMOCRACY

The Federal Government has received a 15 million euro (about N3.3 billion) grant from the European Union (EU) to strengthen its electoral process in the build up to the 2015 election , in the phase II element of the financing agreement to Nigeria’s electoral cycle.
Minister of National Planning Abubakar Suleiman who signed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government in Abuja yesterday said, “it is to contribute to the reinforcement of democracy in Nigeria, put Nigeria on the right path to promote democracy and good governance for socio economic and political development, and also to strengthen strategic planning, policy and operational capacities of the electoral management body including improved legal framework for elections”.
Suleiman noted that the EU has substantial provision to support the conduct of credible, fair and transparent elections organized at national, state, and local government levels, and with the present support, “there would be more popular participation in the conduct of peaceful elections and the entire democratic process, from political party to national election levels, as well as greater participation of women and the marginalized groups in politics and elections”.
